So true…

We have to unite in solidarity against the nationalistic and militaristic schizophrenia from the both side of the borders. One of the symptoms of nationalism is seing your your own nation as a victim – NO! The only victim in this kind of situation are the humanists, the people that focus on reality and social problems. The political ellites are not that antagonistic in the name and all other disputes – the Macedonian and the Greek government have a silent agreement that the disputes will never be closed. That’s the only way how Dora Bakoyanis and Antonio Milososki will remain our daily heroes, that’s the only way to keep people in the matrix, that’s the only way to keep on skipping the real problems – growing prices, social inequalities, intolerance. Believe me, for them it is much easier to point fingers and insult one at eachother, thus stimulating nationalistic sentiments among the masses. They will do everything to escape from reality. A new type of video surveillance vehicle aiming to capture random Romans on a sunny afternoon? Nope.

It was the seemingly more benign Google Maps vehicle. After snapping a few photos on my Nokia N95, I was asked by a group of pensioners who was driving the offending vehicle. “Google”, I informed them. “They are filming the city, street-by-street”, I added. They just shook their heads in bafflement. LINK

There is a huge gap between advertised broadband speeds and the actual speeds users can achieve, new research from consumer group Which? has shown.A survey by the organisation found that broadband packages promising speeds of up to 8Mbps (megabits per second) actually achieved far less.Tests of 300 customers’ net connections revealed that the average download speed they were getting was 2.7Mbps. Stephen Dukker, NComputing CEO says:

Only if you believe that OLPC and Intel’s $200 laptop, with their PDA-like, seven-inch screens and obsolete processors are the answer. But the developing world is not just “village kids,” but rather motivated, ambitious people engaged in business, agriculture, commerce, health care, finance and education. CNET

…A survey this spring of more than 400 developers and IT managers in North America found that the number of developers targeting Windows for their applications declined 12 percent from a year ago. Just 64.8 percent targeted the platform as opposed to 74 percent in 2006.

“We attribute [the decline] largely to the increase in developers beginning to target Linux and different Linux [distributions]…

The arrival of Windows Vista likely only kept the numbers from being even worse. “I think Vista probably offset some of the decline,”…

This new model and growth of the internet will affect every country on the planet, and I prophesy that within three years, pretty much every civilised spot on Earth with a broadband access point in it will be charging by the traffic used. No more quotas, no more ‘unlimited’ anything, it’s all going user-pays. Once one country adopts PAYG utility-style internet (and because of our infrastructure we’ll likely be the first), the rest will follow suit pretty quickly. More…
